Amara Grimes Design originally began in Los Angeles in 1989 out of a rented duplex in West Hollywood near La Brea and Wilshire. Partners Bob Grimes and Janice Williams were both founders and principal designers. "Amara" was a nom de plume Janice had adopted earlier as an aspiring illustrator of children's books. She chose to keep it for the studio name in lieu of her surname.
Shortly after they moved their growing business to Pasadena in 1991, Janice left the studio to raise their two daughters and pursue other interests. The name remained given Janice's initial contributions to the business and occasional contributions thereafter. Although her professional alias became a permanent part of the brand, Janice departed from the studio in 2010. Natural
